Fun events in the Appleton area include the Fox Cities Marathon and Art After Dark

There will be a race for all ages leading up to the Fox Cities Marathon on September 20th.

Other family events include the first Parktoberfest in Greenville and Rhythms of the World in downtown Appleton.

The Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra will also open its season and there will be an “Art After Dark” event at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass.

Fox Cities Marathon, children's races from September 20 to 22

A full weekend of events associated with the Fox Cities Marathon begins on September 20th and ends with the marathon on September 22nd.

Events on Sept. 20 include a Kids Fun Run at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. Registration for the Diaper Dash, Toddler Trot, Mini Dash, Mascot Race, and 1/4-mile and 1/2-mile races is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

There will also be a Nutritional Healing Health & Wellness Expo at UWO-Fox Cities, 1478 Midway Road, Menasha, with packet pickup from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Events on Sept. 21 include the Scheels 10K Run/Walk and the Ascension 5K Run/Walk at Riverside Park, 500 E. Wisconsin Ave., Neenah. Race pick-up begins at 7 a.m. and races begin at 9 a.m.

Another Nutritional Healing Health & Wellness Expo with packet pickup will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at UWO-Fox Cities, Perry Hall, 1478 Midway Road, Menasha.

On September 22, the Fox Cities Marathon, ThedaCare Half Marathon and OSMS Relay Marathon will start at UWO-Fox Cities in Menasha and finish at Riverside Park in Neenah. Wheelchair and hand crank start is at 6:55 a.m.; marathon, half marathon (open division), relay start is at 7:05 a.m.; and half marathon (race walk division) is at 7:05 a.m.

First Parktoberfest to raise funds for the Greenville Lions

Friends of Greenville Lions Park will host its first Parktoberfest on September 21. The event will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the park at the intersection of State 76 and 96.

There will be a beer garden, food trucks and live music. Bands scheduled include Beach Patrol, Acoustic Mayhem and Genesee Depot.

The kids' zone features several bouncy castles, temporary tattoos, balloon artists, a pumpkin painting contest and more.

Multicultural music and dance at Rhythms of the World

Rhythms of the World, a celebration of multicultural music and dance, will take place on September 21. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Houdini Plaza, 121 W. College Ave., Appleton.

Artists from diverse cultural backgrounds will perform music and dances from their countries. African American, Aboriginal Australian, Caribbean, Central and South American, Chinese, European, Indian, Indonesian, Hmong, Filipino and Native American cultures will celebrate their national and local traditions.

Additionally, interactive educational activities will take place in the Building for Kids on September 21. Admission to the museum is free for everyone.

There will also be handicrafts and food for sale. Admission is free.

Concert of the Fox Valley Symphony with violinist Jeanyi Kim

The Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, 400 College Ave., Appleton, on September 21. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. There will be an introductory lecture and a reception after the concert.

The concert begins with the world premiere of “Brief as the Lightning” by Benjamin Krause. “Brief as the Lightning” was commissioned by Kevin and April Ann Sütterlin as a gift to the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra in honor of Dr. Monroe Eugene Trout, a Fox Valley philanthropist. This is followed by the music of Margaret Bonds.

After the break, Johannes Brahms' “Violin Concerto in D major, op. 77” will be performed with Jeanyi Kim on violin.
