Two people were arrested following a serious accident in Nottingham.

According to Nottinghamshire Police, two cars, a Ford Fiesta and a BMW, collided on the A453 in front of the Clifton campus of Nottingham Trent University at around 01:45 CEST on Friday.

Two people, a passenger in the Ford and a passenger in the BMW, suffered what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

A 50-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and a 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of serious bodily harm through dangerous driving and drunk driving, police said.

Police are asking motorists, especially trucks, to avoid the area as “significant traffic disruptions” are expected due to the incident.

The closure is between Green Lane and Farnborough Road.

National Highways advised people to postpone their journeys if possible and public transport was affected.

Nottingham City Transport has warned of delays on its routes 1, 4, 48 and 53, while Trent Barton said Skylink would be unable to serve Campus and Clifton Pastures stops.

Trent Barton told passengers that the road was expected to be closed until about 9 p.m.

Nottingham Trent University has postponed teaching at its Clifton campus and asked participants not to travel there.

Sergeant Steve Waft thanked people for their patience and asked witnesses to come forward.

He said: “I am aware of the disruption this incident has caused and I would like to reassure motorists that we are working hard to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

“However, due to the extent of the accident, we expect the closure to remain in place for several hours while our investigation continues and we ask motorists to avoid the area if possible.”
