Walz is ridiculed after declaring at a rally: “We cannot afford this for another four years.”

“We cannot afford to do this for another four years,” Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz told attendees at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, sparking a wave of ridicule on social media.

During his speech Saturday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Walz was talking about gun violence when he was distracted by an audience member who appeared to need water. Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, interrupted his speech to draw attention to the protester.

“Things like we did in Minnesota, where we implemented enhanced background checks and red flags to get the guns out of there and make a difference,” Walz described.

“And I still have my guns to go pheasant shooting in a few weeks….We need some water, can we get [a] look after him?” added the candidate, pointing at the participant.

“I’m going to bring you home quickly, folks: Look, Kamala Harris has made it clear that these guys want to spread fear,” Walz began. “They want to tell you that [you should] just get over it, it's a fact of life. That's the way it is.”

“[Harris] simply said it doesn't have to be that way,” he added. “It doesn't have to be that way. We can't afford to do that for another four years.”

Walz then went on to discuss Project 2025, from which the Trump team has repeatedly distanced itself.

Although Walz may have been referring to gun violence or Trump's rhetoric when he spoke of “four more years” of a problem, the ambiguity of his statement led conservative commentators to mock the Minnesota governor on social media for his apparent criticism of the Biden administration.

“This guy is campaigning for Trump now?” wrote commentator Rita Panahi on X.

“I’m on his side,” Donald Trump Jr. jokingly replied.
