Cohoes man arrested for illegal possession of weapons in Troy

A Cohoes man was arrested Wednesday after police say he attempted to flee from police with a gun.

According to a press release, Troy Police patrol officers who serve the Lansingburgh area observed activity around 2nd Avenue and 116th Street around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday.

“Officers began questioning a man on a bicycle in the area,” authorities said in a news release. “During the questioning, the man fled; initially on his bicycle, then dismounted from the bicycle and continued to flee on foot. While fleeing, the man began to discard his outer clothing and a small shoulder bag in the alley.”

Authorities said they were able to arrest the suspect a short distance away without further incident.

While examining the crime scene, police say they found an illegal, loaded handgun in the suspect's possession. Detectives and evidence technicians were reportedly called in to assist with the investigation.

Ehab M. Abdalla, 21, of Cohoes was arraigned in Troy City Court and transported to the Rensselaer County Jail. He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and obstruction of governmental administration, as well as violating Troy's bicycle law, according to a news release.

“Troy Police patrol officers are tasked with responding to emergency and non-emergency calls in their assigned zones while also being proactive in addressing crime. In this case, a proactive officer observed an area, conducted an on-site investigation, which ultimately resulted in the seizure of an illegal firearm and the arrest of a violent individual,” authorities said in a news release. “Through these efforts, the various divisions of the Troy Police Department continue to serve our Troy community. The combined efforts of the Mayor, administration and the Troy Police Department remain strong and we are all committed to creating a safer and cleaner Troy.”
