4 dead in 24th mass murder with firearms in 2024

In the incident, which occurred at about 11 p.m. local time, three people died at the scene, a fourth victim died at a local hospital and 18 additional gunshot victims had been identified by 7 a.m. EDT, according to Birmingham police Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

According to CNN, at least four of the victims hospitalized suffered life-threatening injuries.

“The shooting was not a random incident, but an isolated incident in which multiple victims were caught in the crossfire,” Fitzgerald wrote.

Police believe that “several” people opened fire and that no suspects are in custody.

Authorities have not yet determined who the intended target(s) of the shooting were.

This is the third mass killing by gun violence, defined as a mass shooting with four or more fatalities, in Birmingham this year, including a July 13 shooting at a nightclub that left four dead and a Feb. 16 shooting at a car wash. Birmingham is Alabama's second-largest city.
