Murder investigation launched after man died in alleged assault

A murder investigation has been launched after a man died as a result of an alleged attack.

Shortly before 5am today (Sunday) there was a disturbance at an address on Holly Avenue in the Wallsend area of North Tyneside.

A man in his 60s had suffered serious injuries that police said were “consistent with an attack.”

The emergency services arrived and confirmed the man’s death a short time later.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Northumbria Police launched a murder investigation into the man's death and two men – aged 41 and 34 – were arrested on suspicion of murder.

Both men are currently in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Steel, of Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team (MIT), said: “Firstly, our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the man who has sadly passed away at this difficult time.

“I would ask that their privacy be respected as they try to process what has happened.

“We have launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the man’s death, which we are treating as suspicious.

“Two people were arrested and are currently still in police custody.”

Detective Chief Inspector Steel added: “I would ask anyone with information relating to our investigation to contact us immediately.

“Your information, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you, will help us get the answers the man's family deserves.”

Officers remain at the scene to conduct enquiries in connection with the investigation and anyone with concerns is asked to speak to an officer on duty.
