Jorge Masvidal sends Leon Edwards a fiery message: “I’m going to spank your skinny little ass”

It seems almost an eternity ago that Jorge Masvidal was involved in a backstage fight with Leon Edwards that gave rise to a catchphrase that later became part of MMA jargon.

“I gave him the threesome with the lemonade”

That's how Masvidal told the story of how he caught Edwards with a few punches after the fighters faced off at a UFC event in London in 2019. Given the animosity between them, it seemed like Masvidal and Edwards would eventually settle their grievances in the Octagon, but somehow the UFC never pulled the trigger and made the matchup happen.

Even though the incident happened over five years ago, Masvidal and Edwards still get asked about it today because the rivalry that was born between them that day has never been resolved.

Masvidal, for his part, claims that he accepted a fight against Edwards, but the future UFC champion declined, so the clash never took place.

“I know he wouldn't fight me,” Masvidal told MMA Fighting. “He got an offer and turned it down. He doesn't want that.”

“I tried [to fight him]. Leon Edwards doesn't want that. He had other options, he basically chose other things than fighting me. I can tell you that much.”

Could that possibly change now that Masvidal is planning a comeback in the UFC and Edwards needs an opponent after losing the welterweight title to Belal Muhammad in July?

Masvidal is not against the idea because he knows that there is still a lot left to do and that the mutual disdain has not simply disappeared.

Although nothing has been decided about his comeback fight, Masvidal has welcomed the chance to face Edwards and he is throwing down the gauntlet to face him sooner rather than later.

“I'm telling you right now, Leon, I'm going to kick your ass,” Masvidal said. “Let's fucking do it. I don't know, maybe December 7th in Vegas, maybe next year at the Super Bowl. I don't know, but I'm going to kick your ass.”

Of course, Edwards has not fought since his loss to Muhammad in July, although he has hinted at a possible return before the end of the year.

Although he had no vested interest in this welterweight title fight, Masvidal admitted he was incredibly impressed with Muhammad, who effectively outboxed Edwards for most of the five-round bout.

Muhammad is now undefeated in 11 consecutive fights and Masvidal had nothing but praise for the new UFC welterweight champion.

“First of all, Belal [improved] so much since I first saw him,” Masvidal said. “I've seen him fight live in the UFC before and it was like he's not the best athlete, he doesn't have the craziest skills. But slowly but surely this guy just got better and better and better. There were a lot of moments where I thought he wasn't going to beat this guy. Wrong! He beat this guy up. He did that multiple times.

“Now that I see him as a champion, I think he's one of the guys who has improved the most. Really incredible. Great journey.”
