Red Sox manager Alex Cora had to be held during the ejection against the Twins

With the Boston Red Sox mathematically out of contention for the postseason, coach Alex Cora let some of his frustration vent during Sunday's first doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins.

In the first inning, Cora calmly left the dugout to speak to the umpires after interference was called at second base. But the argument became heated when Cora began to wave his arms wildly. He then ran to the second base bag, waved his hands from his eyes to the bag, and angrily pointed at second base umpire Dan Merzel. Cora then had to be restrained by third base umpire Alan Porter.

The manager was immediately fired.

The trouble started with Byron Buxton at second base. Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta threw back to the bag. But as he took the throw, Red Sox second baseman Vaughn Grissom's knee blocked the bag and the umpires sent the runner to third base for interference.

Cora seemed upset that Porter and not Merzel had made the decision, even though Merzel was closely involved in the game.

The play was ruled an error by Grissom, but Pivetta came out of the inning unscathed.

It was Cora's third ejection of the season. He will be allowed to referee the second game of the doubleheader starting at 5:35 p.m. ET.
