Lorain Lions run for donations to fight childhood cancer

Lorain Lions Club members and residents raised awareness and funds at the STEPS Walk to Fight Childhood Cancer on September 14.

“The eighth annual STEPS Walk attracted 45 Lorain Lions and community members and was held at Lakeview Park, 1800 W. Erie Ave.,” said Barry Buck, president of the Lorain Lions Club, in a press release. “Lorain Lions support an important goal of Lions Clubs International: fighting childhood cancer worldwide.”

“Participants raised just over $1,000 to provide financial support to individuals and families affected by childhood cancer and to fund pediatric cancer research through the Ohio Lions Pediatric Cancer Foundation.”

The Lorain Lions Club would like to extend a sincere “thank you” to the STEPS Walk participants who donated their time and to the treasurers who made the 2024 Walk a success, Lion Bob Cobos, event chairman, said in the press release.

The STEPS Walk is part of a larger initiative by the Ohio Lions.

Lions clubs across Ohio are hosting STEPS walks or runs throughout September, uniting their mission to defeat childhood cancer, the press release said.

The Lions Clubs in Ohio are making a statement that will be heard around the world: “Lions in Ohio are fighting childhood cancer, one step at a time,” the press release states.

“(According to) data from the Lions Club International Foundation website, one in 285 children in the United States is diagnosed with cancer before age 20, or 43 children per day,” Lion spokesman Mitchell Fallis said in the press release. “The survival rate for childhood cancer in the United States is 90%.”

Money raised during the STEPS Walk will be given to families in Ohio to cover the cost of transporting their children to treatments, appointments and medications, as well as to hospitals conducting cancer research, the press release said.
