Pro Football Hall of Fame member Jimmy Johnson criticized Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper for his treatment of quarterback Bryce Young.

The second-year player was benched during the team's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and was replaced as starting quarterback earlier this week. Panthers head coach Dave Canales said it was his decision, but noted that general manager Dan Morgan and executive vice president Brandt Tilis have spoken out on the matter.

Johnson said on “FOX NFL Sunday” before the start of Week 3 games that the responsibility ultimately rests on Tepper’s shoulders.

“The owner of the Carolina Panthers – that's the problem,” Johnson said. “He makes the important decisions without listening to his football people. David Tepper … Well, it's his team, he can do whatever he wants.”

“But look at the guys left. He's the one who wanted Bryce Young as No. 1. … Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, Brian Burns, look at Baker Mayfeld, Sam Darnold, look at coaches Steve Wilks, Frank Reich, Matt Rhule and so on — he chased them all away. He makes the decisions. He needs to listen to his football people and stop playing fantasy football.”

Dalton was named to the Panthers' Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Young completed 18 of 26 passes for 84 yards in last week's 26-3 loss to the Chargers. He hasn't thrown a touchdown pass since Christmas Eve 2024.
