Driver arrested in connection with fatal hit-and-run crash in downtown Phoenix

PHOENIX – A man is in custody following a fatal hit-and-run crash in downtown Phoenix early Saturday morning.

Phoenix police said they were called to the area near 16th Street and Camelback Road around 12:30 a.m. for a report of an accident.

When officers arrived, they found two cars involved and a man with serious injuries.

The man, identified as 29-year-old Dillon Mares, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver, who was reportedly at fault, initially fled the scene of the accident before police arrived.

As police announced on Sunday, 24-year-old Travis Smith was arrested in connection with the accident.

Police believe Smith was traveling south on 16th Street when he ran a red light at Camelback Road and collided with Mares' car.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support the family.

The crash remains under investigation.
