Dolphins player Skylar Thompson injured in game against Seahawks

SEATTLE – Backup Skylar Thompson, who had already replaced starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins, left Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks early, so the team had to rely on third quarterback Tim Boyle in the second half at Lumen Field.

Later in the third quarter, Thompson was officially taken out of the game due to a suspected chest injury.

The Seahawks led 24-3 well into the fourth quarter.

Thompson took a heavy sack on third down from Seahawks linebacker Tyrel Dodson early in the third quarter. He was slow to get back to his feet, barely moving his right shoulder as he jogged back to the sideline while simultaneously clutching his chest/rib area.

Even after that hit, Thompson didn't have to deal with the injury and returned for the next drive. However, on that series, he was knocked down and hit in the right shoulder as he threw a pass into the flat.

Thompson lay on the ground for several minutes while the trainers tended to him. Once he was back on his feet and able to walk under his own power, Thompson was escorted directly to the visiting Miami team's locker room.

Boyle was named as Thompson's backup for the Dolphins after he was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday. Miami has Tyler Huntley on the active roster, but he will be inactive before the game and available as a third quarterback in case Boyle is also out.

Thompson had completed 13 of 19 passes for 107 yards at the time of his departure as Miami struggled to get going on offense in Seattle.

Seattle took a 10-0 lead when running back Zach Charbonnet scored on a 4-yard run up the middle. The ball was notably caught earlier by physical wide receiver DK Metcalf, who leapt high to put it over cornerback Kendall Fuller on the right sideline.

Even when the Dolphins were gifted good field position at Seattle's 5-yard line after a Kader Kohou interception, they were unable to put the ball in the net. Sanders kicked the short field goal after the Miami offense stalled.

On the next play, the Seahawks made the Dolphins pay further. Metcalf got free across the Miami secondary, with safety Jevon Holland the next defender in the Cover 2 view. Metcalf caught the 71-yard touchdown pass from Smith.

Miami's defense kept the team in the game in the second and third quarters, managing to get out of the field on third downs. Late in the third quarter, defensive tackle Zach Sieler made an interception on a deflected ball from Calais Campbell that allowed him to make a takeaway.

Boyle drove the Dolphins 50 yards to the Seahawks' 2-yard line, but the drive ended when the third quarterback threw an incomplete pass to Achane at the pylon after he had apparently fallen to the ground due to contact with a defender.

The Dolphins had a strange end to the first half. In the middle of the field, he threw the ball not into the end zone for a Hail Mary, but into the middle of the field to tight end Jonnu Smith. There was a penalty on the defense for an untimed down, but even then Thompson did

The Seahawks' opening series ended with a 56-yard field goal by kicker Jason Myers. Defensive tackle Da'Shawn Hand scored a sack by coming through the middle to bring down Smith after he beat right guard Anthony Bradford with an inside rip move.

After Seattle converted its long field, Miami failed to do so as Jason Sanders missed a 57-yard pass wide left. The Dolphins gained 22 yards from Thompson to Achane on the first offensive play, but failed on a third-and-1 attempt, giving the ball to running back Jeff Wilson Jr. for no gain before sending the kicker out on a fourth-and-1 attempt. The Dolphins failed to get what could have been a horse-collar penalty that had been assessed a few plays earlier on a 9-yard first down rush by Jaylen Wright.

Tagovailoa is on the injured list while he works through concussion protocol. The injured list will keep him out of action for at least the next three games after Sunday's game against the Seahawks. He was on the bench after traveling with the team to Seattle.

After the long journey of more than 3,000 miles back to South Florida, the Dolphins have an extra day before their Week 4 game, which sees them face the Tennessee Titans again at Hard Rock Stadium on Monday night, September 30th.
