The late start of Jackson Powers-Johnson of the Las Vegas Raiders could prove beneficial

It is not easy for a newcomer to have to wait so long until he can finally play in the league for the first time.

Las Vegas Raiders rookie Jackson Powers-Johnson was one of the best offensive linemen in this year's NFL Draft, but unfortunately injuries and illnesses delayed his move to the NFL.

The Oregon product missed much of training camp and the first two weeks of his rookie season, but Powers-Johnson will make his debut when the Raiders host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

We often experience situations in which newcomers are immediately thrown in at the deep end and can no longer withstand the pressure placed on them.

Even though the road has been tough for the rookie over the past few months, watching from afar all this time and growing mentally could pay off in the end.

“I mean, it's just technical stuff and also what's happening in the game, the speed of the game,” Powers-Johnson said earlier this week of what he's observed and learned from the sidelines. “It's different. So, just learning the flow of an NFL game and being able to sit back and see how everyone reacts is a great coaching point and a great thing I've been able to learn.”

Despite initial difficulties, the rookie is optimistic about the potential of his fellow offensive linemen.

“These guys are, excuse my language, real ass-kickers, and they did a great job [last weekend]said Powers-Johnson. “And their mentality, their pride and our togetherness is unmatched in my opinion. So we have a lot of things to improve on, and that's the most exciting thing. But we have a lot of great things going on now; we have the mentality we need to want it. We're just a few steps away from getting where we need to be, but we're going to get there, and that's the best part.”

It remains to be seen how much Powers-Johnson will play in this game, but it would not be a surprise to see the second-round pick start a few times throughout the season.
