Murder suspect wanted in 14-year-old unsolved case arrested after simple mistake

A murder suspect in a 14-year-old unsolved case was arrested by Florida police after committing a simple driving error.

Timothy Hickerson, 43, was stopped by police in Palm Coast after running a red light on Old Kings Road.

Hickerson's arrest was captured on a police body camera as he was ordered to step out of his white pickup truck by officers from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.

The surprise was clear on Hickerson's face when police told him that not only had he received a ticket for running a red light, but that he had been arrested on an outstanding warrant for a 2010 murder in Virginia.

Hickerson is the prime suspect in the murder of 23-year-old Shane Donahue in Nokesville, Virginia.

Donahue was last seen about 14 years earlier, in March 2010, when he left his parents' home an hour southwest of Washington, DC.

Donahue is presumed dead, but his body was never found and the case was closed.

But the case was recently reopened after investigators were presented with new information.

According to the sheriff's office, Hickerson was observed leaving Donahue's parents' home and later returning to the victim's home.

Over the years, Shane Donahue's family and friends have never stopped searching for him, putting up signs, holding vigils, and celebrating his birthday every August.

He was also linked to a break-in at Donahue's home that occurred just days before the victim's disappearance.

No motive has been given as to why Hickerson might have killed Donahue, nor is there any further information on where his remains might be.

Hickerson is being held in the Flagler County Jail until he can be extradited to Virginia.

“This shows that there is no such thing as a simple traffic stop. This case ended with a fugitive wanted for a murder over 14 years ago being brought to justice,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly.

“If you are a fugitive, we will catch you, no matter where you fled from, and put you in prison.”
