Billy Horschel is accused of being ungrateful towards his saviour just minutes after his victory over Rory McIlroy

Billy Horschel just won his second BMW PGA Championship title at Wentworth with an eagle on the second playoff hole. Horschel, Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence were tied at 20 under par after the fourth round, and Horschel emerged victorious by defeating the two. McIlroy narrowly missed out on the title despite a strong performance, and the win cemented Horschel's position among golf's elite. So what went wrong? Well, a lot, according to golf fans.

But now things get interesting. During the playoff, Lawrence was eliminated with a bogey on the first extra hole, while Horschel and McIlroy made birdies. A crucial intervention by an umpire prevented any possible controversy by cancelling Horschel's shot so Lawrence could mark his ball. What happened after the pro's victory was that he did not look the umpire in the eye when shaking hands.

This was noted on one of the X-sites run by Tron Carter. The author of the post further noted: “It's hard to express how disappointed I am in Billy for telling off the referee for doing the right thing. And that Thriston Lawrence put them in that position in the first place. Unsportsmanlike conduct! I can expect a lot more from Horschel, who I have really changed my mind about.”

Carter later provided another update on the situation, writing on X: “Correction: I just looked at it again and the referee stopped him from shooting so Lawrence could mark. That could have been an absolutely disgusting move by Horschel!” Well, whatever happened, happened. The accusations quickly died down with this update.

Did the golfer say anything about the pressure he faced after the tournament? No, not really. But Horschel talked about his experiences on the course and how he felt after winning the tournament.

In a nail-biting finale of the BMW PGA Championship, Billy Horschel made history by becoming the first American to win the tournament twice. And his eagle putt beat his good friend Rory McIlroy, which apparently left Horschel with mixed feelings.

“I am excited and enthusiastic about my game,” Horschel said in a grateful voice. “At the same time, I'm a little disappointed. Rory is a really good friend of mine, a once-in-a-generation talent, and he was so close this year.” Horschel's sympathy for McIlroy's narrow defeat was quite genuine. “I feel for him” He admitted to highlighting the bond between them.

The final round saw an incredible turnaround. Horschel started in second place, tied with McIlroy and three shots behind leader Matteo Manassero. Thriston Lawrence's seven birdies, including a stunning 26-foot putt on the 16th hole, briefly upset the leaderboard and he finished in third place. McIlroy's 46-foot eagle putt on the 17th hole put him in the lead and set him up for a thrilling playoff. But in the end, Horschel's eagle on the second playoff hole secured his victory.

Although he was not at his best, Horschel attributed his victory today to fate. “I was very lucky to get this win today. I gave my best with every shot and persevered – that's what I managed today. That's what you have to do when you're not playing at full speed.”
