Teens committing car theft cause car crash with stolen car in downtown Columbus

According to police, the two suspects, two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-olds, were arrested at the scene of the accident.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four teenagers were taken into custody Sunday night after a crash involving a stolen car in downtown Columbus, police said.

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to the area of ​​East Main Street and Lilley Avenue around 6:30 p.m. for a report of an armed robbery and carjacking.

Sergeant James Fuqua said several suspects robbed a person at gunpoint and took their vehicle.

Officers later located the stolen vehicle in the area of ​​East Fifth and Peters Avenue. Patrol officers, along with a Columbus Police helicopter, began pursuing the vehicle.

Fuqua said officers made several attempts to stop the stolen vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, but they were unsuccessful. As the vehicle entered downtown, officers following the suspects backed away, Fuqua said.

According to Fuqua, the driver of the stolen vehicle ran a red light at the corner of Third and Broad Streets and crashed. The vehicle spun out of control and came to a stop after hitting a parked car about 100 feet from the accident scene.

According to police, no one was seriously injured in the accident. All four suspects were arrested at the scene and charges are pending, Fuqua said.
