Gettysburg Vice President and Student's Family Issue Statement on Racial Slur Incident

New details have been released about an incident at Gettysburg College in which a student was slashed in the chest with a racial slur. On Sept. 19, WGAL News 8 published an article about the incident in which a student on the Gettysburg College men's swim team used a box cutter to slash a racial slur into another team member at a swim team meet. An email has since been sent out with a joint statement from the family and Gettysburg Vice President for College Life Anne Ehrlich, saying the perpetrator is no longer enrolled at the school. The victim's family said in their statement, “We pray together that we can awaken a collective conscience that will promote healing and help achieve justice for our son and the rest of the Gettysburg College community.” The victim's family identified the student as the only person of color at the meet in a separate Sept. 20 statement. The statement also said that the college is working with the victim on how to move forward, although law enforcement is not currently involved. The released email said this would be the last time the college would send an update on the matter. You can read the full statements from the family and Ehrlich here.
