Police identify, arrest suspect in fatal shooting in VTA – NBC Bay Area

Detectives with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office have identified and arrested a man suspected of shooting at a Valley Transportation Authority facility in San Jose that left one person dead on Friday.

The agency said 33-year-old Duc Minh Bui was the sole shooter and “responsible for the victim's death.” Bui is an employee of VTA and is believed to have worked with the victim.

The shooting was first reported just before 10 p.m. Friday at the VTA's Chaboya Division Yard in the 2200 block of South 7th Street. Officers arrived at the scene and found a man with “at least one gunshot wound.”

After the San Jose Fire Department and County EMS arrived on scene, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff's officials identified them as VTA employees but did not release the victim's identity.

Due to the incident, VTA has increased security measures at all locations.

“VTA is committed to supporting its employees during this difficult time. Mental health professionals are available to employees and their families,” the agency said in a press release on Saturday.

Raj Singh, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local #265, said employees are still in shock.

He added that amid the “confusion and chaos,” a loved one at VTA had passed away.

“I've had the pleasure of working with him for the last seven or eight years since he was in this division. We lost a good person. He's a very good person,” Singh told NBC Bay Area on Saturday.

This is the second fatal shooting in three years to affect the VTA community. In 2021, an employee shot and killed nine colleagues before taking his own life.

“This incident is getting some of our people going. We really thought we had put some of the things from before behind us and obviously this incident is going to get a lot of that going again,” Singh said.

Following the incident, employees gathered to create a memorial in memory of their colleagues and brought flowers, candles and balloons.
