“I wish I hadn’t done it”

If members of the Beverly Hills, 90210 The cast reunited on September 14 for 90s Con 2024 and didn't hold back their feelings about the show's reboot.

Brian Austin Green, Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth and Ian Ziering gathered in Daytona Beach, Florida to reminisce and revealed they had some thoughts about the CWs 90210 Reboot that lasted five seasons from 2008 to 2013.

While Green said he “liked” the concept of the show, which is about rich kids at West Beverly Hills High School, Garth regrets taking part.

“I wish I hadn't done it. Nothing against them,” said Garth, 52. “The producer was a friend of a friend, and I remember him coming into my living room, sitting me down, [billed it as] this once in a lifetime opportunity. He asked me if I would do it and I didn't know how to say no at the time. But the people were very nice and I wish them all the best.”

Carteris added: “I never wanted [do it]. I was so shocked that they were doing a new show. I thought to myself, 'Is it that they crave it so much that you're just going to try and reinvent it over and over again?'”

Green said: “It's not offensive at all, to me it's like we've done this show for ten years and it's like, okay, done.”

While only Garth, Shannen Doherty and Tori Spelling participated 90210 along with new stars like Shenae Grimes and AnnaLynne McCord, the original Beverly Hills, 90210 The cast came together for another revival, Fox's BH90210 in 2019, in which they played exaggerated versions of themselves in an ongoing drama.

Ziering admitted: “I was pretty much the only person who said loudly that we should give the audience what they want: comfort food.”

Carteris called the short-lived experience “cathartic.”

“It felt like being together as adults, having our children, being able to work together,” she said. “I thought that was probably one of the most defining moments of my life.”

During their 90s Con panel, the four looked back fondly on the original series, which ran for 10 seasons from 1990 to 2000. Green writes Beverly Hills, 90210 Success can be attributed to the “lack of the Internet” at that time.

“The '90s were a different time: there was no way to check facts, no one was running around filming everything,” the actor explained. “We brought a piece of the world that was famous and that no one had really seen. Because there was no access to it, people really liked what we were doing. I honestly don't think it would have the same impact this time around as it did back then.”

Carteris claimed the show was well received by viewers because it fearlessly tackled serious issues such as teen sex, domestic violence, and alcohol and drug abuse.

“Milk and cookies and children are just good and worth listening to, they're true stories – and people want to be seen. People wanted to be heard,” she continued, adding: “I was very touched by those of you who came to talk to me. When you talk about how it connected you and who you were, that's the greatest tribute you can pay. It's moving every time.”

Were there moments when it went too far? Certainly, said Ziering, “For me there was an episode in which Steve [Sanders] had to do a PSA test for skin cancer. And of course that's very important, but it was so clumsy that I actually thought someone was being paid for it.”

Garth added, “We had a lot of moments where it was a clash, but I enjoyed them. When I rewatch the show, we get more and more edgy. Even I watch it and enjoy it as a fan. Even in the moments where it was a clash, I'm still so proud of the show and love it.”

90s Con Florida runs through Sunday, September 15th at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.
