LSP police officer charged with assault after off-duty incident

This afternoon, shortly after 5:00 p.m., an off-duty police officer was charged with two counts of simple assault following a disturbance at the LSU vs. UCLA football game.

During the game, police officers responded to a disturbance in the stands and found that a physical altercation had occurred between the off-duty police officer and two male individuals.

Further investigation revealed that the off-duty police officer, identified as 30-year-old Artellus Bellard of Lake Charles, began the assault after a verbal argument.

Trooper Bellard, assigned to Troop D Patrol since 2021, was charged with two counts of simple assault and released on summons with a pending court date.

No further information is currently available until the criminal and administrative proceedings have been concluded.
