“Hack for a Cause”: AI for safer drug prescriptions

The Hack for a Cause hackathon is organised by the Cyprus Institute (CyI) in collaboration with the Cyprus Anticancer Society and focuses on using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the drug prescription process for hospitalised cancer patients and in particular address the complexities of polypharmacy.

The goal is to develop an AI tool that uses patients' treatment plans – documents that specify prescribed medications, dosages, frequencies, routes of administration, allergies and comorbidities – as well as publicly available drug descriptions to provide high-level alerts to doctors during the prescription process. These alerts are triggered when the tool detects drug interactions, contraindications with the patient's medical record or possible overdoses.
