Teenager arrested after attack on classmates in Siberian region of Irkutsk

A 13-year-old middle school student in Siberia's Irkutsk region was detained after attacking his classmates, local police said on Monday.

Police said the student injured a classmate in a locker room and inflicted “minor injuries” on other students in the city of Balagansk, about 5,000 kilometers east of Moscow. The victims are receiving medical treatment and their injuries are not life-threatening, according to authorities.

“School staff arrested the eighth-grader and handed him over to the investigation and crisis response team,” the regional branch of the Interior Ministry said.

Russia'The state investigative committee responsible for investigating serious crimes opened proceedings for attempted murder and negligence, while the public prosecutor's office announced it would monitor the investigation.

Police officials did not disclose what weapon was used in the attack, but the government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta reported that a hammer was used.

The incident followed a similar attack last week in the Ural Mountains city of Chelyabinsk, where another 13-year-old was arrested for injuring at least four people, including a teacher, in a hammer attack on a local middle school.
