Tropical system develops into hurricane before reaching Florida this week – WFTV

ORLANDO, Florida – Channel 9 meteorologists are monitoring a large active tropical area in the Caribbean.

There is a 90% chance that the low pressure system will develop into a named storm in the next two days.

The system will be called Helene because it strengthens and organizes.

The tropical system will eventually move into the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to develop into a hurricane.

Currently, it looks like the storm will make landfall near Big Bend in Florida sometime Thursday.

This would be a similar scenario to Hurricane Debby, where the main action is to the west of us, but we could get some feeder bands.

Of course there will be changes. It is not even clear yet, so the predicted trajectory may shift east or west depending on the formation of the center.

From Wednesday night to Friday morning, the probability for periods of heavy rain and wind increases.
