State Rep. Tracy Estes arrested for threatening violence against wife after seeking restraining order

Northwest Alabama elected official, State Rep. Tracy Estes (R-Winfield), was arrested Friday evening by the Marion County Sheriff's Office on charges of third-degree domestic violence and booked into the Marion County Jail.

According to WBRC, John “Tracy” Estes, 57, was the subject of a protective order successfully filed by his wife two hours before he was arrested on domestic violence charges. The protective order was filed by Estes' wife on the grounds that she was in danger and that Estes had made multiple verbal threats to hurt her. In one instance listed in the order, Estes was described as banging on the door of a bedroom in their home for more than two hours.

The restraining order, signed by a Marion County District Court judge, prohibited Estes from coming within 100 yards of her home and required him to surrender any firearms he owned to authorities.

Estes is in his second term in the Alabama House of Representatives, representing the 17th District, which includes parts of Lamar, Marion and Winston counties.

After his arrest was made public, Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter said, “I am aware of the situation surrounding Representative Estes and have full confidence that our justice system will take appropriate action.”

“The people of Alabama deserve the very best from their elected officials, and I expect lawmakers to be above reproach in both their professional and personal lives,” said Ledbetter (R-Rainsville).

As of Monday morning, Estes had not made any statement to the media or the public.
