Fatal accident early in the morning: Young motorcyclist dead, SUV occupants injured

EDGEWATER, Maryland. — A 19-year-old man was killed in a fatal motorcycle accident early Sunday morning in Anne Arundel County.

The incident occurred on September 22, 2024 at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Solomon's Island Road near Old South River Road South, south of the South River Bridge in Edgewater.

According to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, a 2020 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Daniel Joseph Helmly Jr., 19, of Lothian, Maryland, was traveling north on Solomon's Island Road when it collided with a 2003 Ford Expedition that was turning left onto Old South River Road South.

Anne Arundel County Emergency Medical Services pronounced Helmly dead at the scene.

The driver of the Expedition, a 52-year-old woman from Rockville, Maryland, and her passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

The AACPD Traffic Safety Division is currently investigating the accident. Additional details about the incident are pending as the investigation is ongoing.
