2 men die after ATV accident on remote forest road in Trinity County

HAYFORK, California — Two men were killed Saturday when their off-road vehicle overturned and struck a tree on a remote forest road in Trinity County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP said it was called to the crash around 12:44 p.m. on Forest Service Road 32N04, just north of Carr Creek Road in the Hayfork area.

Michael Cagnina, 65, of Vacaville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver, Bobby Jones, 47, of Vacaville, succumbed to his injuries shortly after medical personnel arrived at the scene, the CHP said. Officials do not yet know which of the drivers is believed to be the driver.

According to the CHP, preliminary investigations indicate the couple were traveling east when the SUV plunged down an embankment and then collided with a tree.

Officials say alcohol or drugs are suspected to have played a role, but the accident remains under investigation.
