Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan in the HBO series Green Lantern

HBO's DC series Lanterns has found his Hal Jordan.

Emmy winner Kyle Chandler is set to play the legendary member of the Green Lantern Corps in the series, sources report. The Hollywood ReporterThe show will be the first series role for the Friday Night Lights Star since Showtime's 2022 drama Super pumped.

Lanternswhich received a series order in June after years of development, was written by Chris Mundy (Ozarks), Damon Lindelof (Guardian, Lost) and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King. The trio co-writes and executive produces the series, with Mundy serving as showrunner.

Castings and hiring of directors are underway for the HBO show. The series is set to be filmed in Atlanta from January to June next year.

Lanterns is described as gritty, True Detective mood, as it focuses on Jordan reluctantly mentoring a younger Lantern, John Stewart, who was one of the company's first black superheroes in DC's publishing history. The story sees the two characters investigate a murder on Earth with larger implications. Sources say DC and producers are looking for a young, fresher actor for the role, which he will play alongside an older and bigger name.

DC was originally looking for a movie star to play Jordan and had talks with Josh Brolin, but he ultimately backed out. And while there were rumors that actors like Chris Pine or Ewan McGregor were next on the list, it turns out that was mostly wishful thinking.

HBO declined to comment.

Chandler became known for his Emmy-winning role as Coach Eric Taylor in the popular Friday Night Lights TV series that aired on NBC from 2006 to 2011. He returned to series work with the Netflix thriller Bloodlinewhich earned him two Emmy nominations.
