Warm, dry weather conditions in Wisconsin in September 2024

MILWAUKEEMeteorological autumn began on September 1st and normally when we think of autumn we think of cooler temperatures, but not this time of year. Most of September so far has been above average with highs around 27°C.

As for cooler temperatures, long-term forecast models show no cooling in sight. Highs of around 26 degrees are expected over the next six days. This means that temperatures will be 10 degrees above average on most days.

Although we're experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures this fall, Milwaukee isn't exactly having one of the warmest starts to September. This year, Milwaukee's September 1-15 season marks the 48th warmest start in the record books.

The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting above-average temperatures for the Midwest for six to 10 days (September 21-25) and for 8-14 days (September 23-29), which could slightly increase our ranking for one of the warmest Septembers by the end of the month.

At this time of year, temperatures are usually around 24 degrees Celsius, rising to over 20 degrees Celsius by the end of September.

With many more warm days forecast, we also expect more dry days. Unfortunately, this is not good news for southern Wisconsin, as many areas are already experiencing unusually dry conditions.

Another extended dry spell is looming in southeastern Wisconsin over the next six days.

There is a slight chance of rain over the weekend, but this too may be delayed until Tuesday, September 24. The lack of rain will likely result in more areas experiencing unusually dry conditions and/or a moderate drought occurring in southern areas of the state.

While this year has been wet overall with a surplus of over 5 inches of rain, this month we are entering a dry period with a deficit of over 1.5 inches of rain.

With this dry start to September, Milwaukee has the fourth driest start to the meteorological fall. With a blocking pattern in the atmosphere loosening over the next two weeks, we should see rain and storms back in the forecast before the end of the month.
