In the Lincoln Project ad, Sam Elliott urges skeptical voters to abandon their prejudices and support Kamala Harris

The voice of Sam Elliott confronts sexism in voting behavior directly in the latest ad out of The Lincoln Project.

In a voiceover peppered with occasional obscenities, the “Tombstone” actor urges voters to put aside prejudices and support Kamala Harris and became the first female president of America.

“What the hell are you waiting for?” Elliott asks. “Because when it comes to the women issue, it's time to get over it. It's time for hope, for change. It's time to be a man and vote for a woman.”

The Lincoln Project, founded and run by former Republican policy advisers, has built a reputation over more than four years for delivering blunt messages to counter the former president Donald Trump's Agenda. As Trump runs for the third consecutive Republican presidential nomination, Elliott delivers a monologue in his famous corny accent.

“I can't believe we're having this conversation again,” he said. “So here we go.”

Elliott expressed particular concern about a political ad in 2020 produced by the then Democratic candidate Joe Biden's campaign. At the time, Elliott was supporting a candidate with a similar public profile to himself, a white man and long-time celebrity who only became a star later in life.

But now, with Biden step aside Elliott said voters this year should support Harris's vice president as his preferred successor rather than seeking another term, and that they should also be willing to refocus their support on Harris rather than consider a return to the Trump era.

A press release from the Lincoln Project makes it clear that producers want to reach skeptical voters who supported Biden but might, for some reason, feel uncomfortable voting for Harris. Elliott's voiceover suggests that there is too much at stake in this race for personal bias to interfere with rational decision-making.

“They know what's at stake,” says Elliott. “One candidate promises a divided America full of lies and hate. And another stands for change.”

“Kamala Harris has more courage, more honor, more guts than this guy ever had,” Elliott adds as the footage cuts to black-and-white images of Trump.

Elliott makes some comments that get the ad off the air, but also express his anger at the prospect of another Trump presidency.

“You decide, are we really going back down the same damn broken path? Or are we moving forward?”
