Why are there two “MNF” games?

The NFL entered into its current media rights deal in 2021, and as part of the agreement, ESPN and ABC received additional game broadcasts, including an expansion of multigame broadcasts of “Monday Night Football.”

The NFL has relied on “MNF” doubleheaders for years, usually to include games on both the West and East coasts, but only recently has ESPN started broadcasting more overlapping schedules. That included early- and late-season matchups in the 2023 schedule, including when two games kicked off simultaneously last December.
