Man allegedly shot mother, grandmother says someone else is to blame

MONTICELLO, Ky. (WKYT) – A southern Kentucky man accused of trying to kill his mother and grandmother claims police arrested the wrong man.

Chase Jackson, 25, is in the Wayne County Jail following the shooting late Saturday night on Winchester Road near Monticello.

A woman who said her son had just shot her in the head and arm was still able to call 911. In tapes obtained by WKYT, 50-year-old Audrey Jackson desperately calls for help and tells dispatchers that Chase Jackson was the one who shot.

Police say Jackson shot his mother and 94-year-old grandmother and then fled on Kentucky 90, where he was found and arrested. But Jackson said he jumped out the window of the jail when he heard someone shooting.

“I come back to my room, the door flies open again, and suddenly he's there again. I jump out the window and fly up 90 degrees,” Jackson said.

Jackson has been charged with attempted murder and assault. His mother and grandmother are both in critical condition. However, he claims he was not the shooter.

“Remember, my mother and I, the one who said I shot her and so on, got into an argument and so on,” Jackson said.

Relatives say Jackson shot the two over a dispute over the use of a car. They say he did not jump out a window, but climbed into the house through the window. They also say his mother and grandmother helped him with his previous problems with the law.

Three years ago, Jackson stole a police car and was chased from Monticello to Lexington.

“After that, there were about 15 police cars, seven police officers and three helicopters chasing me. It was crazy,” he told WKYT on Monday about the November 2021 crime.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison, but was released after serving the term.
