Man who ordered his son to rob and murder PnB Rock sentenced to 31 years to life in prison

Two years after rapper PnB Rock was shot and killed while having lunch with his girlfriend at a Los Angeles restaurant, the father who ordered his then 17-year-old son to rob and kill the artist has been sentenced to prison.

On Monday, September 23, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Connie Quinones sentenced 42-year-old Freddie Lee Trone to 31 years to life in prison, according to a press release from the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office.

According to a statement previously obtained by PEOPLE from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Trone was sentenced on August 7 after a jury found him guilty of murder, conspiracy to commit robbery and two counts of robbery. Trone's son, an unnamed juvenile defendant, was charged with murder and has a “mental competency hearing” scheduled for late August. He is now 19 and in a juvenile detention center.

In addition to Trone's Aug. 7 conviction, a second defendant, Tremont Jones, was convicted of two counts of robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, prosecutors said.

A third defendant, Trone's wife, Shauntel Trone, who pleaded accessory to the crime in July 1998, is scheduled to be sentenced on January 16.

“Today, justice was served with two men convicted of the tragic and senseless murder of Rakim Hasheem Allen, also known to many as the talented rap artist PnB Rock,” District Attorney Gascón said in the press release. “I want to express my deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of Rakim Allen. His life was cut short by an act of violence that no family should have to endure. I also want to commend the tireless efforts of our Community Violence Reduction Unit. Their efforts in this case demonstrate the importance of collaboration between law enforcement, prosecutors and the community to reduce violence and bring perpetrators to justice.”

PnB Rock, born Rakim Hasheem Allen, died on September 12, 2022 at the age of 30 following the robbery and murder at a Roscoe's House of Chicken 'N Waffles in South Los Angeles.

A month after the incident, his girlfriend Stephanie Sibounheuang said he saved her life. “My husband saved my life by throwing me under the table,” she wrote on Instagram. “I'm not supposed to be here, but because of him, I am.”

“Bearing witness to what I saw and seeing it over and over in my head,” she continued. “That I was thrown out of the restaurant, that I couldn't ride in the ambulance or the hospital, that I had my car keys, purse and phone taken from me, that I was forcibly put in the back of a police car, that I was locked in an interrogation room all night while all of that was happening, and that I am the last person in the world to know that my husband didn't make it even though he believed and trusted that he would.”
