Victim shot in Trenton brawl identified as 17-year-old

The victim, who was shot during a fight in Trenton's West Ward on Sunday, has been identified as a 17-year-old boy.

Opium Leverette of Trenton died in the hospital Sunday afternoon, less than an hour after he was shot, the Mercer County District Attorney's Office said in a news release.

City police officers responded to a report of shots fired near Parkside Avenue and Homan Avenue at 12:32 p.m. Officers found Leverette with a gunshot wound near the intersection, officials said.

He was pronounced dead at 1:09 p.m. at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, authorities said.

A Trenton police spokesman said the incident apparently began with a fight between two people and ended with a single gunshot.

No arrests have been made. The Mercer County District Attorney's Office asks anyone with information to call Detective Luis Vega at 609-278-2720.
