DUCHESNE, Utah, September 23, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – A Duchesne teenager has been charged as an adult in the alleged fatal shooting of a younger family member.

The Duchesne County District Attorney's Office has charged 16-year-old Haegan Ray Sagers with murder and discharge of a firearm with great bodily injury, both first-degree felonies. Gephardt Daily is only releasing the accused juvenile's name because he will be tried as an adult.

The victim, also male, was a 14-year-old relative from the same household. The indictment was signed by Michael Goodrich, Duchesne's assistant district attorney.

Duchesne County Sheriff's officers responded Sunday to a report of a family dispute in northwest Duchesne County in which a firearm was discharged, the DCSO said in a news release Sunday evening.

“When officers arrived at the scene, they found a male juvenile outside the residence and another male juvenile dead inside the residence. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body.”

No other family members were in the home at the time of the incident, the DCSO statement said. Detectives were called and began their investigation.

“A male juvenile was taken into custody and transported to the Duchesne County Sheriff's Office for questioning before being transported to the Split Mountain Juvenile Detention Center in Vernal.”

The victim's name was not released.
