Four rescue helicopters were called to the community of South Strabane in Washington County on Sunday afternoon after a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 left several people injured and the highway closed for three hours.

According to the South Strabane Fire Department, the accident occurred around 2 p.m. on the roadway where Interstate 79 North meets I-70 West. When emergency crews arrived, they found a four-vehicle crash, two of which had passengers trapped inside. One of the vehicles was towing a boat.

Details of the accident were not immediately known. The state police are investigating.

Three helicopters landed on the highway to transport patients from the scene to hospitals in the Pittsburgh area. A fourth person was flown out of the UPMC Washington helipad. Three others were treated for injuries at UPMC Washington.

There is no information about the condition of those involved and the severity of their injuries.

The North Strabane Fire and Rescue Service and Chair EMS also responded to the scene of the accident.
