Apalachee High School reopens after tragic shooting incident

Apalachee High School will reopen for classes on Tuesday, nearly three weeks after the school shooting that left two students and two teachers dead and nine others injured. The school, located northeast of Atlanta, has extensively overhauled its security measures.

The incident occurred on September 4, when 14-year-old student Colt Gray left his math class with an AR-15 rifle given to him by his father. He opened fire, and the school was put on lockdown. Students were evacuated to the football field, where some witnessed disturbing scenes, including dead bodies and injured classmates.

When classes resume, students will attend classes only half-time as part of a “phased return” through mid-October. Enhanced security measures include additional police, counselors and therapy dogs to help students cope with the aftermath of the tragedy. The hallway where the shooting occurred will remain closed for the remainder of the school year.
