Media release

Police in Hawaii have arrested a man in Honolulu and charged him with numerous fentanyl-related drug offenses.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, at approximately 2:55 p.m., South Hilo Patrol Officers were dispatched to Hilo International Airport in Hilo for a response from a male passenger attempting to bring an airsoft pistol in his carry-on luggage through the TSA security checkpoint.

The suspect, identified as 60-year-old Olaf Seyler of Honolulu, was attempting to pass through security when an X-ray revealed an object that looked like a gun.

The TSA reported that a search of Seyler's carry-on luggage revealed a glass pipe with a white powdery substance in the stem and bulbous portion. Additionally, 27 individual one-inch-diameter resealable Ziploc bags containing a powdery, rock-like substance were found, as well as a working digital scale and a replica Glock 17 airsoft pistol.

Seyler was arrested on suspicion of drug possession and transported to the East Hawai'i Detention Center, where he was held for further processing. Seyler's luggage was seized and taken to the Hilo Police Department, where it was held pending the execution of a search warrant.

A total of 24.57 net grams of fentanyl were seized from the resealable Ziploc bags. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), as little as 2 milligrams (0.002 grams) of fentanyl can constitute a lethal dose. Based on this information, the seized fentanyl could have potentially resulted in over 12,000 lethal doses.

On September 22, 2024, detectives from Vice Division I executed a search warrant for Seyler's luggage and seized 0.63 grams of methamphetamine and an additional 0.93 grams of fentanyl.

After consulting with the District Attorney's Office, District I Vice Detectives charged Seyler with the following offenses:

• Attempt to promote a dangerous drug of the first order

• Second degree advertising for a dangerous drug

• Three cases of advertising a dangerous drug in the third degree

Seyler's bail was set at $210,000. Seyler's first court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon, September 23, 2024, in South Hilo District Court.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact Officer Wyatt Kaili-leong of the District I Vice Division at (808) 961-2203 or via email at [email protected].
