Family of hit-and-run victim promises never to stop fighting for justice

PELHAM, Ga. (WALB) – Police are still searching for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash.

On Friday evening, 88-year-old Amos Anderson was working in the yard in front of his home on Mt. Olive Road when a vehicle traveling east struck Anderson.

After the impact, the vehicle quickly backed up and headed back west. When officers arrived, Anderson was lying in a ditch on the south side of the road.

The family vows to never give up the search for the driver.

“We want him to be found. And we won't stop looking until we find him,” says Ann Bond, Amos' daughter.

Due to the steep road slope, it is difficult for drivers to see pedestrians below.

“We called the State Patrol and the State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team. It turns out someone had climbed the hill in front of his house while trying to cross the street. They struck Mr. Anderson and then fled the scene of the accident,” said Investigator Jacob Pollock.

What makes this hit-and-run case so difficult is the fact that there was no debris left behind from the accident and no witnesses were present. Experts say such cases are usually difficult to solve. Some authorities report that the conviction rate for hit-and-run cases is less than 10% of all cases.

“We don't have any leads right now. We went around and knocked on neighbors' doors yesterday. If anyone hears or sees anything, we just want the witnesses to come forward. We don't have anything right now, but we are working as hard as we can on this case to find out what happened and to give the family some closure,” Pollock said.

“I just want to know who left him in the ditch and then turned around and walked away. They could have helped him. I don't know. They could have saved his life,” said Amos' wife Mary.
