Two people arrested for September 7 shooting in DSU courtyards | Latest News

DOVER, DE – Delaware State University Police have arrested an 18-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy in connection with a shooting at the Courtyards Apartment Complex.

Authorities said 18-year-old Tyrone Harrell was taken into custody without incident on Sept. 9. The 15-year-old suspect was arrested on Sept. 20.

Dejanae Carter and Jenelle Gardner, two seniors at Delaware State University, are roommates at the Courtyards Apartment Complex. On September 7, they were at home when shots were fired, striking the walls of their apartment and shattering a mirror.

Carter says the trauma is still felt more than two weeks after the shooting.

“I'm just happy that I'm OK and that the people affected are OK. But psychologically we're not OK. I don't even want to walk around late at night and if I hear a noise, I'm triggered by it.”

The arrests of 18-year-old Tyrone Harrell, a DSU student, and a 15-year-old suspect are little consolation to Carter.

“It's disheartening to know that they were so young – one 15, the other 18. I'm wondering if I should stay in the University Courtyards, where seniors live. It's a problem that a 15-year-old can come onto our campus and do things he's not allowed to do.”

Carlos Holmes, director of intelligence at Delaware State University, stressed that campus safety remains a top priority.

“DSU has no tolerance for guns on campus in any way. We are very disappointed that this happened – it frustrates us. But we will do everything we can to make sure our students are safe on campus and pray that this does not happen again.”

Although Jenelle Gardner will always have a bad feeling about the incident, she takes some comfort in knowing that justice will be done.

“I'm honestly glad they finally caught them. I know in the past they haven't always been able to find the perpetrator, so I'm just glad the students can rest assured that they caught the shooters.”

Both suspects face multiple charges in connection with the shooting.

Tyrone Harrell, 18, is currently in jail on $200,000 bail in connection with the shooting at the Courtyards Apartment Complex.

The 15-year-old suspect was remanded to a juvenile detention center and bail was set at $226,000.
