2 dead in high-speed crash in California with suspected drunk driver

Two people died in a car crash in Seaside late Sunday night. Police attributed the incident to drunken driving. “They were crying. They were completely devastated. Everyone thought it was really chaos. It was really scary to watch,” said Chris Bebawi, a witness at the scene. At about 10:15 p.m., a vehicle was speeding down Del Monte Boulevard at about 100 mph, police said. The car drove onto the island near Fremont Boulevard and struck a homeless man. Police said the car continued on Fremont Boulevard and crashed through the raised divider for the left-turn lane onto Fremont. The vehicle overturned and came to rest in the dirt at the northeast corner of Fremont Boulevard and Military Avenue. The driver of the vehicle was ejected from the car. Police said both the driver and the homeless person died at the scene. “So we suspect they were going about 100 mph,” said Justin Pascone of the Seaside Police Department. “We also know the driver had a suspended license and should not have been on the road,” the officer added. Police added there were several people in the vehicle, all of whom were under the influence of alcohol. The deceased driver was identified as a 19-year-old man with a suspended license who was on probation for drunk driving. The occupants of the vehicle said they were from Watsonville, headed to the beach and had all been drinking. “You know, you just want to go to the beach with your friends and drive. You shouldn't drive and do things you shouldn't do and you think it's all fine until you have an accident. You think it's all fine until you die and take someone with you that had nothing to do with it,” Chris said. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office identified the driver as Leon Torres, 19, of Watsonville. Also killed in the crash was 40-year-old Daniel Carrico-Lynn, a homeless man who was eating a pizza on the median. “Take care of the people you love. Hug someone you love because it could be anyone. That homeless man was. And it was someone's son too. And he eats a pizza and he's gone. Wrong place, wrong time, no reason. This is an unimaginable loss for no reason,” Bebawi added. The four occupants of the car survived the crash. If you have any information about this crash, please call Seaside Police.
