Northern man accused of murder asks judge for immunity under Stand Your Ground law

HOMELAND PARK, SC (FOX Carolina) – A man accused of murder is expected to appear in court Tuesday morning to ask a judge for immunity.

On March 11, 2023, according to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, an argument broke out between Matthew Richey and another person. The situation escalated and the other person was shot.

Officials said Richey turned himself in after the incident and faces murder charges.

Now, more than a year later, a request for immunity under the “Stand Your Ground” law will be presented to a judge at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

In South Carolina, the “Stand Your Ground” principle applies. This means that if you feel that you or another person is in imminent death or serious danger, you have the right to use deadly force in self-defense.
