Heavy rain and storms hit morning rush hour – NBC Chicago

Tuesday morning's rush hour could be soaking wet for some people as heavy rains move into northeast Illinois from the west, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.

“There will be isolated showers and occasional heavy rain waves during the morning hours,” said NBC 5 meteorologist Alicia Roman, adding that a storm is possible.

At around 5:30 a.m., Chicago weather radar indicated heavy rain in Lee and Ogle counties, moving east toward LaSalle.

The wet weather is expected to continue into the morning hours, Roman said, with more heavy rain expected in Chicago's southern counties. Other areas may see isolated drizzle, Roman added.

A National Weather Service advisory warned that heavy rain could cause localized, “mostly minor” flooding in the Chicago area later this morning. The NWS also said thunderstorms were possible Tuesday morning and the threat would continue into the early afternoon.

Showers are expected to taper off later Tuesday afternoon, Roman said, but isolated rain could still linger overnight and into the early hours of Wednesday morning. Additional lake showers are possible later Wednesday morning in northwest Indiana, Roman said.

Temperatures on Tuesday will be between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius, Roman said, noting that the recent late summer heat – with temperatures between 27 and 32 degrees – may be over for good.

“Tonight temperatures will drop to 7 to 10 degrees,” Roman said.

Temperatures are expected to remain around 24 degrees for the rest of the week, Roman added.
