Garland man kills wife and mother-in-law in shooting in apartment with 2 children inside: police

According to Garland police, a man shot his wife and mother-in-law after a domestic dispute while two children were in the apartment.

Police were called to the Arts at Broadway Commons Apartments off Interstate 30 near Lake Ray Hubbard around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they found that the door had been forced open.

Officers looked inside and saw two small children. As they went inside, they heard several gunshots coming from the back bedroom. Officers took cover and began issuing orders.

While attempting to get the children out safely, 35-year-old Broderick Early Kennedy came out of the bedroom and turned himself in, according to police.

In the bedroom, police found Broderick's wife, 38-year-old Donille Lashay Kennedy, shot to death.

Police also found Donille's mother, 58-year-old Shirley Jean Phillip, shot but still alive. She was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Police said the two children had been handed over to other family members.

It is unclear what led to the shooting.

Broderick is charged with capital murder. He is being held without bail at the Garland Detention Center.
