Valdosta woman arrested for child abandonment

A Valdosta woman was arrested for leaving a one-year-old child unattended in a local residence for an unknown period of time.

Valdosta Police report:

On September 20, 2024, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Valdosta Police Officers responded to a residence in the 1800 block of Englewood Drive after a citizen called 911 to report that a one-year-old child had been left alone in a residence for an unknown period of time.

The witnesses stated that they arrived at the apartment around 7:00 a.m. and found the child alone in the
residence. Witnesses told officers that 25-year-old mother Brieanna Torres arrived at the home about 30 minutes after they arrived. They stated that Torres appeared to be under the influence of marijuana.
Officers made contact with Torres and immediately realized she was under the influence of narcotics. She told officers several stories about what happened, but could not tell them where she had been.
When officers attempted to arrest Torres for reckless conduct for leaving her child unattended, she began to physically resist the officers. Torres attempted to punch an officer in the head. After a brief struggle, Torres was taken into custody without incident. She was booked into the Lowndes County Jail on charges of reckless conduct (misdemeanor) and obstructing an officer (felony).
The Ministry of Family and Children Services was also informed of the incident.
