A private ambulance trying to take a child to the hospital with its blue lights and siren on was involved in an accident in Barrington in which the ambulance overturned.

Barrington Police and Fire Departments responded to West Northwest Highway and North Hough Street in Barrington around 9:15 p.m. Sunday for a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

Barrington Fire Department Chief John Christian said rescue crews were notified that an ambulance was involved in the accident.

When firefighters arrived, they found a private ambulance owned by Superior and a second car involved in the accident, Christian said. The ambulance had rolled onto its side.

Christian said the ambulance was on its way to a patient in the hospital when the collision occurred.

A person accompanying the patient in the back of the ambulance suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

Four other people, including Superior paramedics, were evaluated but declined transport to the hospital, Christian said.

Barrington Police Chief David Daigle said a 2012 Mazda 3, driven by a 36-year-old Arlington Heights man, was traveling east on Route 14 and approaching Route 59.

The Mazda had a green light and entered the intersection.

The Superior ambulance, a 2016 Mercedes, was driven by a 26-year-old man and was traveling south on Hough Street, Daigle said.

Witnesses reported that the ambulance's blue lights and siren were on as it entered the intersection.

Daigle said the ambulance was struck by the Mazda on the passenger side and overturned.

The patient in the ambulance was a 3-year-old boy accompanied by a 39-year-old woman.
