New Britain Mayor Announces She Will Not Run for a Seventh Term

NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) – New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart announced Tuesday that she will not seek a seventh term.

Stewart held a press conference Tuesday morning after posting her announcement on social media.

During her press conference, she mentioned that New Britain was in a poor financial situation when she took office.

“We were about to hand our keys over to the state of Connecticut,” she said. “At the time, we couldn't pay our salaries. We had tax defaults because we didn't have enough money to pay our bills.”

Stewart has been mayor of New Britain for more than ten years. She was 26 years old when she was first elected.

She said the city is doing better now.

“After 12 years, it's time for new leaders to write the next chapter for New Britain,” she said. “And for me, it's time to start the next chapter of my life.”

The next mayoral election will take place in November 2025.

“It will be the first time in 15 years that you will not see my name on a municipal ballot,” Stewart said. “This is an incredibly difficult decision for me.”

Stewart thanked the citizens of New Britain for their continued support.

She said she wasn't sure what the future held for her.

“Maybe I’ll run for higher office, maybe I’ll go into the private sector,” she said.
