Fight reported at Big E convention in West Springfield, MA – NBC Boston

Two men are accused of, among other things, assault on a police officer after a fight broke out at The Big E fair in western Massachusetts on Monday evening.

West Springfield police said officers working at the Big E responded to a report of a fight that occurred outside the Brooks Building near Gate 5 at around 10:13 p.m. When they arrived, a victim told police he was attacked by a man who was now walking away.

An officer approached the man and ordered him to stop so they could identify him, but the man continued walking and said he had not been involved in a struggle. The officer again tried to stop the man, but the man punched him in the chest and pushed him away.

Two police officers grabbed the man and threw him to the ground while a group of people surrounded him and “behaved hostilely” toward them, police said. Another man in the crowd then jumped on the back of an officer who was attempting to handcuff the first man.

Other officers quickly pulled the second man away and attempted to arrest him, but he resisted.

Both men were eventually arrested and taken away from the scene.

The first man, 20-year-old Davian Lopez of Springfield, is charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace. The second man, 21-year-old London Jefferson, also of Springfield, is charged with the same three counts.

The remaining crowd was escorted out through Gate 5 without further incident, police said.

Monday's incident came just over a week after two more people were arrested and several people were injured in a brawl at The Big E.

The Big E opened on September 13th and runs until Sunday.
