High school student dies in accident in South Carolina

The Anderson County Coroner released new information on a crash that left a 17-year-old high school student dead and her boyfriend injured Tuesday. (The above video aired at noon.) “It's just a tragedy,” Coroner Greg Shore said. He said a witness driving behind the students' Chevrolet S10 truck reported the crash just after 11 a.m. on Clamp Drive at Ernest Lane in Belton. The witness and crash victims were all students at Belton Honea Path High School who had just left school early, Shore said. He said the truck came around a curve and a large bird, possibly a turkey, flew out of a tree and struck the vehicle's windshield. The truck then veered off the right side of the road, overcorrected and veered off the left side of the road and struck a tree, Shore said. The passenger was not wearing a seatbelt, was trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene, Shore said. The driver was flown to the hospital in critical condition with a trauma alert and spoke when emergency responders arrived at the scene, according to Shore. “We are all heartbroken by the circumstances,” Shore said. He said he has not yet released the victim's name as family has been notified of the death. WYFF News 4 is not reporting further details on the victims until they are officially identified.
