Well, I wasn't as lucky as yesterday, even though my guessing was good. I just got into a pickle after my second guess. SPINE left me with a green and yellow box and, as I later learned, 47 words to choose from. I typed STEAD, narrowing the number down to just 3. Four green boxes lay before me and three stark choices: STEAL, STEAK, and STEAM. I considered choosing a word with all three letters, but then I got careless instead.

I chose STEAK first because it sounds delicious. With some mashed potatoes on the side. Maybe a nice Caesar salad. Some iced tea. That was wrong though. Next I chose STEAM because I play most of my video games on PC through Steam. And who likes to steal? Thieves do, that's who! I was lucky. STEAM was the wordle!

A total failure. 0 points for guessing in four and 0 for the draw with the bot.

How to play competitive Wordle

• If you get a 1, guessing is worth 3 points, if you get a 2, guessing is worth 2 points, if you get a 3, guessing is worth 1 point, if you get a 4, guessing is worth 0 points, if you get a 5, guessing is worth -1 point, if you get a 6, guessing is worth -2 points and missing the Wordle is worth -3 points.
• If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. If you draw, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add these points together to get your score. Keep a daily score or just play for a new score every day.
• On Fridays you get 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
• You can keep a running record or just play day by day. Have fun!

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word “steam” comes from Old English “Steam”which means “steam, smoke or vapor” and in turn comes from Proto-Germanic “staumaz”which means “steam” or “water vapor.” Its origins are related to the concept of exhalation, smoke, or something rising, and reflect the physical properties of water vapor.

The term is related to similar words in other Germanic languages, such as Dutch “Steam” and German “Steam” (The latter, however, has evolved to place more emphasis on dense steam or water vapor.) Over time, “steam” in English has evolved to also refer to the power and energy associated with steam, particularly during the Industrial Revolution when steam-powered machines played a central role in industry and transportation.
