Lincoln woman arrested after $45,000 worth of stolen jewelry pawned for $2,750

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – A Lincoln woman was arrested Monday after allegedly pawning $45,000 worth of stolen jewelry for just $2,750.

Lincoln police responded to a burglary at a home near Capitol Beach that occurred on the night of September 10.

A man told officers that he hid his wife's birthday gift – a $36,000 bracelet and a $9,000 ring – in the center console of his truck.

Officers learned that someone had broken into the victim's truck overnight and stolen the jewelry. The victim stated that his vehicle was locked, but there were no signs of forced entry.

Jewelry wrappings and papers were discovered scattered along a path north of the house, police wrote.

On September 12, police wrote that 32-year-old Cheyenne Canby pawned the ring at a pawn shop on O Street for $250. Days later, Canby allegedly sold the bracelet at another pawn shop on 48th Street and received $2,500. Canby reportedly returned to the first pawn shop and bought the ring back.

When police contacted her, Canby claimed she found the bracelet under a park bench and lost the ring. She said she believed pawning the items was acceptable because the pawn shop accepts the jewelry. She also told police the ring may have been at a friend's home, but did not provide any further details.

Canby met with officials on Monday to return the ring and was cited for receiving stolen goods and taken to jail.

On Tuesday, a judge set her bail at 10% of $2,500, and her hearing is scheduled for Oct. 23 at 10 a.m.
